Two things you would reasonably want to know before spending an evening, so here they are up front.

Licence: Apache 2.0 for everything, unless a project page says otherwise. Contributions land under the same licence as the project they go into. You keep the copyright on what you write.
How long before you hear back: Within a week. If it has been longer than that, chase me, because it means something has gone wrong rather than that I am ignoring you.
Whether to ask first: For anything small, just open a pull request. For anything that would take you more than an evening, say what you are planning first so neither of us wastes the time.

This is a spare-time project, so progress comes in bursts. The one week applies to replying, not to merging.
